Formaldehyde-based substances are used in the textiles industry to help bind dyes and pigments to fabrics and prevent the colours from running when washed. In addition to preventing the loss of colour, it also helps increase resistance against wrinkles making the clothes easier to care for. This use means that trace amounts of formaldehyde can be found in some items of clothing.
